The intern will be responsible for:
-Sampling biodiversity in arid and hyper-arid ecosystems
-Comparing sand dune, acacia woodland dry valleys, agriculture and other ecosystems
-Building desert food web structures using stable isotope analysis, cafeteria experiments, field sampling, behavioral observations and lab experiments
-Sampling soil fauna
-Working with arthropods
-Developing the detritus food web concept
-Collaborating with Jordanian researchers
-Writing proposals and papers

-Background in biology, environmental science, environmental studies or ecology
-Strong organizational and time management skills
-Affinity for outdoor work with animals, especially arthropods

The Center for Hyper-Arid Socio-Ecology (CHASE), directed by Dr. Elli Groner, is dedicated to the study of the natural ecosystems in the Arava valley and the interaction between those ecosystems and the region’s people.CHASE brings together Jordanian and Israeli researchers to map the biodiversity of the region, in order to better protect natural resources while enabling sustainable human development in the region.

Oil and Gas:
In the wake of the natural gas discoveries in Israel, the Office of the Chief Scientist works to leverage those discoveries to create a knowledge intensive Israeli industry in the fields of oil and gas. This requires international benchmarking research for policies aimed at leveraging natural resources discoveries for the creation of an intensive based industry, as well as planning and executing events aimed with the participation of experts, researchers and companies interested to become active in this area in Israel.

International benchmarking research for policies aimed at encouraging the development of technological industry in the cleantech field, such as water, renewable energies, alternative fuels, reduction of GHG emissions and more. In addition to policy level activity, work scope could include arranging business to business activities, seminars and exhibitions and more.

-Previous knowledge and experience in international policy benchmarking, oil and gas, and cleantech – advantageous
-Advanced computer skills, mainly in Excel and PowerPoint – required
-Excellent writing skills
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) in the Ministry of Economy is charged with execution of government policy for support of industrial R&D. Save a Child’s Heart is an Israeli-based international humanitarian project, whose mission is to improve the quality of pediatric care for children from developing countries. SACH achieves this work by bringing children with life-threatening heart diseases from the developing world to undergo heart surgery in Israel, while also training doctors from those countries to perform such surgeries.
